Fairfield University, a Jesuit institution of higher learning founded in 1942 in Fairfield, Conn. presented 1,247 diplomas at its Sixtieth Commencement on Sunday, May 23, 2010. For the second time in its history, Fairfield University held a separate commencement ceremony for undergraduates in the morning and an afternoon ceremony for those receiving graduate degrees. Both ceremonies were held on the Fairfield campus.
Lisa S Haylon, a resident of West Hartford, CT, was among those who received a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. Katherine N. Lapp, a 1978 graduate of Fairfield University who is executive vice president of Harvard University, delivered the undergraduate commencement speech during the morning ceremony. Dr. James L. Abbruzzese, a 1974 graduate of Fairfield University and native of Hartford, Conn. who is a recognized leader in the field of pancreatic cancer research and treatment, delivered the graduate commencement speech in the afternoon.
